New Process Embeds Coded Data on 3D-Printed Parts
New Process Embeds Coded Data on 3D-Printed Parts New Process Embeds Coded Data on 3D-Printed Parts New Process Embeds Coded Data on 3D-Printed PartsManufacturers are always looking for ways to reduce costs and stay compliant. This includes securing the chain of custody of partes and products they make and reducing counterfeit products. This is especially true for 3D-printed parts, for which realistic knock-offs are easily made. For medical devices, this is where unique device identification (UDI) is particularly important.Printing UDI codes or QR codes on a part or product typically requires an extra step, after the part or product has been manufactured. This slows down the production process and adds extra time and cost. Now, Rize, a Boston, U.S.-based, next-generation additive manufacturing company, has developed a method that embeds identifying information on a product during the 3D-manufacturing process. Whats more, it goes beyond simple identification for tracking to include cod es that are loaded with all the relevant plan and engineering data for that part.We have now created a digital thread that connects the entwurf/model with the final physical part, says Julie Reece, vice president of marketing for Rize. This capability will accelerate Industry 4.0 technologies like blockchain and augmented reality/virtual reality applications, improving compliance, authenticity, and traceability. For You 4D Printing Advances Additive ManufacturingRize utilizes its augmented polymer deposition (APD) technologya combination of fused deposition modeling (FDM) and piezo jetting into a single printerto print end-use parts. A proprietary medical-and-engineering-grade thermoplastic compound is simultaneously extruded with the jetting of functional inks, at the voxel (3D pixel) scale, to vary material properties of the thermoplastic during deposition, creating new design possibilities for engineers. Voxel-level control provides the resolution needed to embed complex QR codes on products, including transferring design, assembly, and performance specification data into the part, creating what Rize calls digitally augmented parts. This re-establishes the link between the finished product and the XML-based 3MF file. A common smartphone app can scan the QR code on the part and instantly display the corresponding digital information online, Reece says. For example, an engineer can store all of a parts information digitally and maintain digital augmentation of the part throughout its lifecycle. This will provide all the data an assembly technician or machinist needs to properly install or troubleshoot the part.Smartphones can read the printed QR codes and instantly bring up important identifying informationThe QR or bar code is imported into the slicer, sized, and placed on the part. The part is then sent to the printer where it is constructed, layer by layer. As the part is being built, the marking ink needed for the QR code is distributed at the voxel level to produce the QR code. As soon as the part is complete, the QR code can be scanned with a smartphone to instantly bring up the digital information. This process builds trust into the part, Reece says. The ink cannot be rubbed or worn off. It is secure, so this capability creates an immutable digital connection between the physical part and its digital twin for traceability and compliance. If a very minor change has been made to the design that cannot be discerned visually, you just scan the part with your smartphone and see all the data related to design changes. Our process for the development of new products generally requires numerous iterations to get the part features just right, says David Perron, group manager at CONMED, a medical device manufacturer, in a recent article on Newequipment.com. The changes are not always obvious, particularly when were looking at dozens of iterations. The QR code will help us easily identify iterations and show the flow of the design thought pro cess. For the first time, 3D printing can support blockchain technologies and ensure that intellectual property capture is completely secure and tamper-proof. Embedded QR codes will also streamline and speed up product design. When two engineers are working on different components, for example, such as a front and back end, they might not be working at the same pace, Reece says. Because the digital thread remains in the QR code, the engineer ready to print can do so, put on smart glasses that read the QR code that will overlay the side that only exits digitally to render the complete assembly. This lets the team know if the designs match and will fit together, and any errors can be caught early. The digitally augmented parts also allow a design team to quickly switch from physical to virtual reality. The QR code can directly link to the CAD file so the designer can virtually manipulate the digital twin, if needed. This streamlines the process and ensures the 3D model being changed is the right version, since each new version is assigned its own unique code. The Rize process is also an effective way to remove any products from the market that are non-compliant due to design changes, piracy, counterfeiting, or obsolescenceall of which damage the customer experience and result in rework, recalls, and loss of brand value.Mark Crawford is an independent writer.Read MorePrints Indelible MarkUltrasound Patch Monitors Critical Components3D Printing a Future of New Metal Actuators For Further DiscussionThis process builds trust into the part. 10 lessons I learned from making many mistakes in my 20s
10 lessons I learned from making many mistakes in my 20s10 lessons I learned from making many mistakes in my 20sOne of the biggest mistakes we make is that we assume we always learn from our mistakes. Ive met enough people who learned little from their own stupidity. We all know these people. In fact, we probablyarethese people. You know why? Its damned hard to learn from your mistakes. Ive never met someone who actually enjoyed failing.Lets be honest, no one likes to make mistakes, and lose their time, energy, or money. So thats why we need to make aneffortto learn from the things that we wish we didnt do. The father of functional philosophy andpragmatist philosophy, John Dewey, made that point obviousThe partie who really thinks learns quite as much from his failures as from his successes.Learning from your mistakes does not happen automatically - it requires thinking and reflection. So heres my reflection on the lessons I learned from the mistakes I made in my twenties. Here we go .1. Dont Think You Know EverythingTheres a word for people who think they know everything Idiot. I meet idiots all the time. And the reason I recognize them is because I used to be one.Every time you dont listen to people smarter than you, when you want to sound smart, or think you know it all- youre being an idiot. Its time to move your ego to the side and understand that life is not about impressing others. Its about fulfillment, collaboration, and the common good. If you want to achieve those things, you need to be humble. But theres good news for people who get annoyed by idiots If they dont decide to become humble, life willmakethem humble at some point.2. Never Blame People For Your UnhappinessAs a child, youre taken care of by others. That may be your parents, siblings, family members, foster parents, or any other person who takes responsibility. Hence, you assume that someone is responsible for you.But thats not true. When you grow up,youare responsible for you. So never look at others when youre unhappy- its not fair to the people in your life. Instead, accept your unhappiness, and thendosomething about it.3. Stop Wasting Time On LosersTheres a big chance the people in your environment dont strive for the same things as you. At some point in my twenties, I was surrounded by people who dropped out of college, were doing drugs, and went out every week. But it doesnt have to be that obvious. Many people live a timid life. People who dont want anything from life and who spend their time watching tv.Dont give your time to those people. The cost is high. You might become one of them.4. Love Is notlage What You ThinkMost of us have this twisted idea about life. I want her to treat me this and this way. Who are you to claim such a thing? And if the other doesnt live up to our expectations, we flip out or leave.Thats called conditional love. Strive for the opposite. Im still learning this. Its difficult to let go of your expectations about love. But you have to. Otherwise, youll never be happy in your relationship.5. You Actually Dont Have A Lot Of TimeWhen youre young, you think you have an endless sea of time. You can do anything you want. And then you blink, and youre celebrating your thirtieth birthday. Its a matter of simple math. Just ask yourself these questionsHow much time am I wasting on things that give me zero fulfillment?Do I like my job?Do I like the people in my life? The answers to these questions will give you clarity about how well youre spending your time.6. Youre Probably Not As Awesome As You ThinkTheres always someone better looking, cooler, smarter, stronger, or you personenname it, than you.Always.So stop thinking youre awesome. Compared to what? Because that statement implies youre comparing yourself to others. Just be yourself and dont compare yourself to others.7. Learning Never StopsLook, when you stop learning and developing yourself youre dead. Im not kidding. When I got out of college, I stopped learning. Guess what? I felt stuck after two years.Push yourself to learn something every day.If youre not getting better, youre getting worse.8. Doing Hard Things Gives You mora PleasureI always ran away from hard things. Improving yourself, working out, saving money, building a business, helping others, investing time in your relationship- its all hard when you do it right. But doing those hard things will have more return on your life, time, energy, and money. When you do something that requires a lot of effort, you feel good about it. When youre tired and still go to the gym for a hard work out, you feel a sense of accomplishment and pride thats unrivaled. Its the same with your career. If youre not doing hard things, dont be surprised if you dont feel alive.9. Being Alone Will Make You More At PeaceIts a dangerous sign if you can never be alone. I come from a very tightknit family, and I always have had close friends. But I realized that I needed to be alone to grow. So I went on abroad trips by myself. But that wasnt enough. I decided to move to London. When youre alone, you have time to know who you are. When youre always with others, youre just a product of the other people in your life. Sometimes you need to distance yourself from others, it will make you a better person.10. Small Decisions Lead To Big OutcomesAnother drink wouldnt hurt, right? Sleeping in today is not bad, right? No one cares if I skip my workout today, right? I can easily spend $1500 on a new iPhone, right? The answer is no, no, no, no, and NO to every other small decision youthinkhas no impact on your life. The truth is that your life is the result of your small decisions. You are what you do every day. Surprisingly, thats actually really good news. That means you can turn your life aroundtoday- simply by doing something small that has a good impact on your life. And what if you keep making mistakes? Who gives a shit? Just make sure you always learn from it.Thisarticlefirst appeared onDariusForoux.com.
